1. Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing (1983)

Seorang veteran perang bisu melewatkan hari demi hari sebagai penjual botol arak bekas. Suatu hari dia menemukan bayi perempuan yang ditelantarkan di jalan. Bayi itu dibesarkan sendiri dan menjadi salah satu alasan untuk tetap hidup di dunia. Setelah dewasa, si anak menjadi penyanyi terkenal. Karena kesibukan dan “prosedur”, si anak semakin terpisah dengan ayah. Ayah bisu di dera rindu teramat dalam dan sakit. Di tengah konser si anak menyusul ke RS namun terlambat sudah. Dengan hati hancur, si anak tampil di akhir konser menyanyikan gubahan lagu “Any Empty Wine Bottle to Sell” yang menjadi legenda.

Saya menontonnya pertama kali sewaktu masih SD dan sudah sangat lama mencari film legendaris Taiwan ini. Siapkan tissue karena film ini akan menguras air mata. Selain kisah mengharubiru, kita juga bisa melihat jelinya sutradara menangkap suasana Hongkong 80-an, daerah kumuh dan kehidupannya kemudian dikontraskan dengan pesatnya pembangunan di pusat kota akan terlihat di sini. Film ini memenangkan 4 Golden Horse Award (Oscar versi Hongkong). Pemeran ayah bisu, Sun Yueh, tampil sangat memukau walau tanpa sepatah katapun.

2. La vita è bella/Life is Beautiful (1997)

Berlatar belakang Jerman menguasai Italia, sang Ayah dan anak dikerjapaksakan di kamp konsetrasi Jerman. Sang ayah membohongi si anak bahwa mereka semua yang ada di sana sedang bermain permainan yang hadiah utamanya adalah sebuah tank. Siapa yang bertahan terakhir, dialah yang akan membawa pulang sebuah tank. Kebohongan sang ayahnya beberapa kali dan pada akhirnya menyelamatkan si anak, membuatnya tetap hidup hingga menarasikan kembali pengorbanan ayahnya.

Film Italia ini berhasil memenangkan 3 Oscar. Walau tergolong bagus, saya pribadi kurang begitu suka dengan gaya si ayah nyentrik Roberto Benigni. Seperti menonton “Jim Carrey”-nya Italia.

3. Road to Perdition (2002)

Michael Sullivan adalah seorang ayah dan anggota mafia, pekerjaannya hitman. Pekerjaan yang selama ini selalu dirahasiakan kepada anak-anaknya. Suatu hari, anak sulungnya menyelinap ke dalam mobil dan menyaksikan ayahnya “bekerja”. Akibatnya? Perencanaan pembunuhan seluruh keluarga yang berujung pada terbunuhnya ibu dan adiknya. Anak tersebut kemudian menjadi target dan terus diburu oleh anak bos mafia yang menganggap bocah tersebut adalah saksi yang perlu dilenyapkan. Tugas sang ayah berubah menjadi pelindung anaknya sendiri dari orang-orang yang ia kenal dan selama ini memberinya nafkah.

4. Cinderella Man (2005)

Berlatar belakang “The Great Depression”, sang ayah, petinju ternama terpaksa menjadi pekerja kasar di pelabuhan. Tanpa mempedulikan cederanya, ia juga bertarung kecil-kecilan (seringkali tanpa sarapan) untuk mencukupi kebutuhan. Sampai pada suatu saat, sang ayah dengan tebal muka singgah ke tempat bos/temannya terdahulu meminta sedekah demi keluarganya. Kebesaran hati ayah benar-benar terlihat di film kisah nyata ini. Bagaimana dia lebih memperhatikan kondisi istri dan anaknya. Menelan harga diri, menahan malu dan bertebal muka. Sebuah inspirasi dan motivasi kepada setiap ayah.

5. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

Ini adalah kisah nyata Chris Gardner, salah satu jutawan dan penulis “The Pursuit of Happyness”. Kisah salesman tunawisma dan jungkir baliknya membesarkan anak sendirian untuk hidup layak. Film ini mengambarkan kesulitan-kesulitan hidup yang terus menghantam Chris. Pisah dengan istrinya, diusir karena menunggak sewa rumah, dikejar karena naik taksi tidak bayar, ditipu, tidur semalaman bersama sang anak di toilet umum (ya, anda tidak salah baca), berebut tempat dengan tuna wisma lainnya di homeless shelter (rumah singgah) demi tidur layak sang anak dan tidak gelandangan di jalan. Sampai kepada perjuangannya mendapatkan pekerjaan sebagai seorang broker dan mendirikan firma keuangannya sendiri.

Don’t ever let somebody tell you… you can’t do something. Not even me. All right?

… If you want something, go get it. Period.

6. World’s Greatest Dad (2009)

Film ini adalah film komedi tidak biasa yang membawa anda ke dunia sesungguhnya. Jadi jangan berharap berakhir seperti film komedi lain. Aktor serba bisa, Robin Williams, bermain sebagai seorang penulis, guru sastra sekaligus ayah yang lemah dalam mendidik anak remajanya. Datanglah realita yang cukup tragis, sang anak mati karena masturbasi di kamarnya sendiri. Sang ayah menutupi kematiannya dengan keahlian menulisnya. Tulisannya menginspirasi teman-teman, bahkan seluruh sekolah anaknya demam “Kyle Clayton”. Sebuah kesempatan seumur hidup, si ayah bisa mencapai puncak ketenaran dengan “memanfaatkan” kematian anaknya sendiri. Namun sang ayah lebih memilih hidup seperti sebelumnya dan mengakui perbuatannya karena dia lebih mencintai anaknya sendiri.

7. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
Sebuah film yang melesatkan karir Robin Williams. Menyamar sebagai pengasuh baru, Mrs. Doubtfire, untuk mendekatkan diri kepada anak-anaknya setelah proses perceraian dengan istrinya. Sepertinya hampir setiap orang pernah menonton film ini.

8. The Wrestler (2008)

Mantan pegulat terkenal 80-an, Randy Robinson, berjuang untuk hidup dan berkeluarga di akhir karirnya. Cedera dan sakit jantungnya membuatnya tidak cukup kuat lagi untuk bertarung. Sang ayah lalu mencoba menjalani hidup normal dan mencoba mendekatkan diri kepada anak perempuannya yang pernah ditinggalkannya sewaktu masih kecil. Diapun mencoba bertahan hidup dengan bekerja sebagai pelayan supermarket. Sayangnya dunia tidak menerimanya untuk hidup selain dari dunia di atas ring. Kesendiriannya dan kesulitan untuk membina hubungan dengan anaknya membuatnya bertarung terakhir kalinya di atas ring, yang mana kemudian membebaskannya.

Hari ini…

Di persimpangan jalan, seorang pengemis tua duduk bersama seorang bocah di pembatas jalan. Si ibu berkulit gelap, dihiasi kerutan tua mendekap bocah laki-laki yang tertawa riang. Hari itu adalah hari yang biasa bagi mereka. Duduk di pembatas jalan, menunggu sisa kasihan dari orang yang lalu lalang. Si bocah mencium kedua pipi dan kening si ibu kemudian tertawa. Si ibu tersipu lalu menatap kosong ke depan. Mungkin lelah menunggu sesuatu untuk dibawa pulang hari itu. Dua orang yang (mungkin) sudah dianggap tidak ada. Si bocah lalu mengganggu si ibu kembali. Diambilnya sekeping uang logam, diletakkan di atas kepala si ibu. Beberapa kali dilakukan si bocah sampai saatnya si ibu menyerah, ikut tertawa bersama si bocah lalu menciumnya sayang.

Mobil SUV besar buatan Jepang membatasi aku dan mereka. Bercanda riang tak peduli sepasang mata memandang sedari awal.

Sial! Sekelilingku menyalak, menggonggongku dengan keras! Lampu kurang ajar itu masih merah, tinggal beberapa detik lagi. 2 menit sekian detik adalah waktu yang terlalu lama bagi kebanyakan orang. Bagiku, waktu tersebut saya belajar sesuatu.

Japanese Shinto priests first wed these two hulking rocks off the coast of Futami more than 1,300 years ago to symbolize the sanctity of marriage. Today, husband rock (the strong, silent type at 30 feet high) and wife rock are still yoked together in the Pacific Ocean by 100 feet of braided rice straw, which is replaced three times a year. (The priests do that at low tide, when the rocks aren’t separated by water, and worshippers join in the ceremony by handing the rope from person to person onshore.) In the summer, the scene is perhaps most divine: The sun appears to rise between the two points, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.

Sialnya bro blogger ini rupanya bawa kamera tapi tidak ada memory cardnya, walhasil sayalah yang jadi paparazzi dadakan.

For malls and groceries? Anyone?

Long story short, we’re stuck! No one to be seen except the 4 of us. It was 17.10 and we’re still unable to find any trail. OMG, we’re screwed this time! It’s time to panic (or at least I thought so). I dashed uncontrollably, consuming too much energy and fell several times. With time against us, all I can think of was to get the hell out as fast as possible. We’re walking 30 minutes trial-and-error for the right path, hoping for another trail to follow. Soon after that as we’re climbing back to an open and higher area, hoping to find someone, my calf ached and stiffened! Cramp! (Perfect time, isn’t it). I fell down in pain with my wife help bending my foot to ease and relax the muscle. It took us 5 minutes for this.

And finally we’re able to find someone of the same club. He’s lost too and following the trail of other hash club to exit. Had little chat and he took different way afterwards. So we’re taking the path lying ahead of us, out of the woods and into the kampoong. Another 10 minutes walk to the base camp. We’re out by 18:00. The great part is my wife. She didn’t experience any injury, walk calmly, no whinning and fix my cramped leg too. She sprained her ankle last 2 weeks in the beginning and I had to get her back. Guess like it’s payback time

Lessons learned:

1. Long (L) route is not just long and winding. It’s accompanied by trial-and-error path. The hare is allowed to put the trail as long as 100 metres away from the last. The hare is also allowed to put a circle at intersection in which signals “now you try finding the right path out of 4 directions!”
2. If you’re short on time. Be focus! Find the trail, look for clue (ie. shoeprints, wet dry leaves etc.) conserve energy and walk normally. You’re not saving time by cramping your legs.
3. If you’re lost, return back to the last trail you saw and stay put. Someone will get you out easily.
4. You can follow the trail of the other hash club to exit if you’re an experienced hasher.
5. Find someone and follow them safely to exit.
6. On the safe side, take the Short (S) route

As anticipated, the movie features Hokkian (Medan Chinese mother tongue) and Indonesian. You will hear spoken Indonesian with Chinese accent and phrase like the infamous “la…”, “lo…” and malay’s “sikit”. So what? Medan adapted two Asia’s culture

Like many other Indie movies, shot with handy camera and without big budget, don’t expect a great scene play, famous actors or superb AV editing. What they’re focusing (I guess) on this first movie is the story. A story which delivers a good message to viewers that there’re a lot of unfortunate people who’s dreaming of affordable healthcare and school. Yet, the final message blows the mind of corruptors and politicians alike that they should learn from a humble boy who work hard to support the family in a noble and honest way.

I found out lack of details and shaky camera as minor disappointment in this first release. But few things that made them worth big round of applause:

1. Crisp and crystal DVD quality video
2. Good subtitling, sync and easy to read
3. Great choice of soundtracks!
   Eminem’s “Mockingbird” blends perfectly.
4. Visual tour of Medan’s best
   You’re taken to see several legendary streetfood sites like Selat Panjang, Wajir and Gedeh. Also housing complex in Cemara Asri, chinese populated distric in Sukaramai and Medan’s landmark, the reservoir.

Despite all flaws and bloopers, I must admit that “Golden Egg” is pioneering the journey of Medan’s indie video production.
